The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed a new contractor to carry out the re-construction of Hancock bridge which was stalled for over two years. The contract has been awarded to the railway contractor who will soon start the re-construction work.

The construction was stalled owing to the tainted contractor and later owing to the GST dispute. In May 2016, the BMC had awarded the contract for Hancock bridge to J Kumar firm which was a tainted company which was proved when an activist filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court regarding the same.

Sai Project bags the contract

Finally, the tender process was completed and out of four companies, Sai Project bagged the tender owing to its lowest bid. The BMC will be spending a total of ₹51.70 cr for the re-construction of Hancock bridge.

The civic administration will table a proposal before the standing committee meeting on Wednesday.

The bridge was dismantled in January 2016 which led to several track-crossing accidents occurred near Sandhurst road.

Dimensions of the Hancock bridge

  • Length- 64.62 metre
  • Width- 30.8 metre
  • Span- 1 year
