To ensure the safety of women passengers during their local train journey, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has decided to launch WhatsApp groups for easier communication between female passengers and the police.

Female constables from each police station will be responsible for creating six WhatsApp groups each named 'Friends in Khaki', with them or Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) acting as group admin.

It is pertinent to note that this development came after several instances of sexual abuse and assault came to notice in the last few months, some even during the broad daylight.

How will this group help women commuters?

Women travellers can use these WhatsApp groups to report any issues they face during their local travel. They can post photos, videos and messages about their concerns and the Railway Police will take immediate action to address them.

It will be launched under the guidance of GRP Commissioner Ravindra Shisave, a total of 102 WhatsApp groups will be created to cover 17 railway stations including central and western under GRP.

Tejaswini Mahila Railway Passengers Association President Lata Argade, while expressing her gratitude, asserted the need for immediate action by the authorities and urged that this WhatsApp group initiative should reach every woman traveling in local trains.
