In a significant move to improve passenger convenience, Central Railway has installed a state-of-the-art IP-based LED video display system at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. The advanced digital screens provide passengers with real-time information on long-distance trains, making it easier to track arrivals, departures, platform numbers and schedule changes.
The newly installed LED display boards have been placed at prominent locations across the station, including the main concourse and passenger hall. They display information on all long-distance trains scheduled to arrive or depart within the next four hours, allowing passengers to access essential travel updates from a single location.
Each screen can display details of up to 12 trains simultaneously, including the train number, train name, scheduled arrival or departure time, and platform number. Separate sections for arriving and departing trains ensure that passengers can quickly locate the information they need, particularly during peak travel hours.
The digital display system is directly integrated with the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), enabling automatic updates every five minutes. Any changes in train schedules, delays or platform allocations are reflected on the screens almost instantly, ensuring passengers receive accurate and timely information throughout their journey.
Central Railway said the project uses an IP-based "Train All-in-One Video Display" system that synchronises information across all digital display boards at the station. This ensures that identical and up-to-date train information is shown on every screen, reducing the possibility of conflicting announcements.
The new system features high-brightness LED display panels with 2.5 mm and 5 mm pixel pitch, making the information clearly visible even from a considerable distance. Besides train schedules, the displays support multilingual text in Marathi, Hindi and English, along with colourful graphics and informative videos, making the system more accessible to passengers from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
The introduction of the smart LED display system is expected to significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers at CSMT. By providing real-time train information at multiple locations, the initiative is likely to reduce congestion at enquiry counters and platform display boards while helping passengers navigate the station more efficiently.
The new digital infrastructure is part of Central Railway's ongoing efforts to modernise passenger services and improve the overall travel experience at one of India's busiest railway stations.
