Rumours regarding army deployment in Mumbai, Pune are baseless: Anil Deshmukh

Several rumours circulating on social media platforms claimed that the state government has asked for the diplomacy of the army in Mumbai and Pune and a 10-day curfew will be imposed.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday informed that rumours were being spread on social media platforms regarding deployment of army in Mumbai and Pune and a 10-day curfew will be imposed. 

Taking to Twitter, Deshmukh said that these were baseless and false rumours which were being spread on WhatsApp and other social media platforms. Action against those who began this rumour has already begun, he added. 

“Malicious rumours are being spread on Whatsapp & other social media platforms about army deployment in Mumbai & Pune to enforce a 10-day curfew. These are baseless, false rumours & Maharashtra Cyber has already begun an action against those who began this rumour (sic),” the state Home Minister tweeted. 

The Maharashtra Home Minister warned about the rumour after several reports circulating on social media platforms claiming that the state government has asked for the diplomacy of the army in Mumbai and Pune and a 10-day curfew will be imposed in order to curb the coronavirus outbreak. 

Earlier, there have been such rumours circulating in the social media platforms and WhatsApp groups creating panic among citizens amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Maharashtra government has asked the citizens to not believe any fake news. 

Maharashtra cyber cell has been monitoring the controversial content and activities being shared on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Twitter and others. Till May 1, the cell has registered 400 offences at various police stations across the state. 

Earlier, Deshmukh had said that there has been an increase in crimes like sharing provocative and objectionable posts against women and communal in nature. Videos encouraging acid attack and rape too were circulated, he added.
