In the last 24 hours, 75 fresh COVID-19 cases have been reported among Maharashtra police personnel, taking the tally of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra Police to 1,964. Maharashtra Police in its statement said that the number of cases has risen to 1,964 whereas the death toll stands at 20. So far, of the total cases in the state, 849 policemen have recovered from the infection, 1,095 cases are still active and 20 have succumbed to the pandemic.
The policemen along with other frontline workers such as doctors, nurses, public transport employees are the most vulnerable to the infection amid the pandemic. The police personnel have been patrolling the streets of the state to ensure lockdown norms are not flouted.
The 1,964 cases consist of 1,741 constables and 223 police officers. The worst-affected among Maharashtra Police are Mumbai Police police personnel. Out of the total cases among the state police force, 1,052 are Mumbai Police officials.
One of the reasons why the number of cases among the policemen is high is due to the irresponsible citizens who disregard lockdown norms. When the policemen take action against these defaulters, they come in contact with these individuals, putting them at risk of contracting the virus.
Despite 20 policemen having succumbed to coronavirus, more than 200 police personnel who have recovered from the infection, have resumed duty, showing fearlessness against the pandemic and commitment towards their duty. However, despite repeated warnings, the people across the state have been flouting lockdown norms.
