Last year, with the untimely demise of Dr Deeepak Amrapurkar by falling in a manhole near Elphinstone Road, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took up the task to avoid any such mishaps by covering all the manholes with steel nets. Although, the work of netting the manholes is going on, there are still 550 manholes devoid of steel nets.

In the monthly review meeting taken by BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta, the report regarding covering and installation of steel nets on manholes on the roads was taken from the concerned department officials. The Commissioner directed the Assistant Commissioner of all the departments to ensure that the steel net has been set up in places where water can be accumulated such as markets, areas near railway stations, theatres etc. quickly.

Mehta also directed the officers that if any other place that requires steel nets is found, then the concerned Assistant commissioner should act upon the same. So far, the steel nets have been installed at 900 of 1,450 manholes.
