After PM Narendra Modi announced an extension in the nationwide lockdown until May 3, the state government decided to end the academic year for schools under the state board as on April 14.

Writing a letter to the education commissioner on Tuesday, the government directed the schools to conclude their academic year 2019/20 and declare summer vacations for its students.

"Students between Classes 1 and 9 should be promoted on the basis of their marks in the previous exams held. Schools can accordingly draw up their scores. For Class 10 SSC exam, the state board would come up with a marking scheme as the last paper - Geography has been cancelled," reads the letter.

The move by the state government comes as a relief for the schools and the students who were anxious as there was a lot of uncertainty about when the schools would reopen. The annual exams for schools have already been cancelled and with the academic year being ended, the students can begin preparing for the upcoming academic year. The state’s publishing bureau- Balbharti has already made PDF textbooks for Classes I to XII available on its website.

Earlier on Sunday, the Maharashtra education department had declared the cancellation of SSC Board's Geography examination along with vocational subject papers for children with special needs.

After which, the Maharashtra State Board formed a committee that will come up with an alternative. The committee will possibly introduce a revised marking scheme. The letter to the education commissioner expressed concerns about the inability to transport answer sheets of Class 10 and 12 exams to the homes of teachers due to the lockdown.

The state board will make a decision on how and when to assess them after the lockdown is lifted.
