Uday Samant: No decision to cancel university exams yet

The school education department recently canceled all pending Class 9, SSC, and Class 11 exams in Maharashtra. Following this announcement, rumours started making the rounds that the government has also cancelled university exams. State Higher Education Minister, Uday Samant has now clarified that this is not the case. He gave out additional information in a video conference.

“My department has not taken any decision to cancel (university) exams. Based on recommendations given by a committee, we will decide when, what time and in which manner the exams should be conducted after consulting the Governor. If a further uncertain situation arises due to coronavirus, then a decision will also be taken regarding future exams, whether they should be conducted online, should not be conducted, and in which pattern”, Samant said.

He added that for the time being, university exams will go on as scheduled, and the format for the exams is currently being discussed by the relevant departments. The minister recently held a video conference with 13 vice-chancellors of non-agricultural universities across the state and appointed a 6-member committee to come up with a viable plan to conduct examinations in a streamlined manner.

“Nothing has been finalised till now though we have collected inputs from stakeholders. We will be submitting our report soon. The question we are faced with is, when will students be able to come to colleges,” committee member and Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor Dr Suhas Pednekar said.

On the other hand, some student council members and management across the state have recommended pushing the academic year to conduct exams at a later date. While it’s uncertain if the Higher Education Ministry will take heed of these recommendations, there are not too many options left right now.
