Security Breach at IIT Powai Under Scanner as Crime Branch Flags Lapses

A major security lapse has come to light at IIT Powai following a detailed investigation by the Mumbai Crime Branch, which revealed that a 22-year-old man was able to stay on the campus for nearly two weeks without being detected. Serious concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the institute’s security framework after it was found that the individual entered and exited the premises around 8 to 10 times over the fortnight.

The man, identified as Bilal Ahmed Faiyaz Ahmed Teli, was found to have used multiple secure communication platforms, including messaging and calling apps, as well as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to mask his online activities. His mobile device has been seized, and forensic examination has revealed multiple videos of internal campus areas, which were reportedly uploaded to social media platforms.

Throughout his stay, it has been established that the accused frequently changed his sleeping location, often resting in hostel lounges or unoccupied rooms, in an apparent effort to evade detection. During this time, various internal locations were reportedly surveyed and recorded. Authorities have retrieved substantial CCTV footage and other digital evidence, which has enabled the mapping of the suspect’s route and activities on campus. A visual map of his movement has been prepared to aid further investigation. Despite these findings, the underlying motive behind his surveillance and video documentation remains uncertain.

It was also confirmed that between June 7 and 10, the accused left Mumbai for Surat, where he claimed to have visited relatives. This travel detail is currently being verified by investigators. In addition, it has been found that the individual maintained and used at least 21 different email addresses, prompting concerns over potential misuse. Given the nature of the evidence, both the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have been involved in the inquiry. Independent interrogations are being conducted to determine whether the activities had broader implications.

Officials involved in the case have emphasized that all angles are being explored and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. The case has raised urgent questions about surveillance and safety on one of the country's most prestigious academic campuses.
