The Shikhar Savarak Award Ceremony organised by the Swatantryaveer Savarkar National Memorial was held on Sunday, August 23, 2020. Colonel Premchand was awarded the first-ever Shikhar Savarkar Lifetime Achievement Award 2020 at an award ceremony which was held online this year, due to the lockdown amidst the Coronavirus outbreak.
Three important awards were given in this ceremony, which was attended by Bombay High Court Judge Mridula Bhatkar, former Director-General of Police Praveen Dixit and Additional Director General of Police Atul Chandra Kulkarni.
Talking about the same, Manjiri Marathe, treasurer of the association said that in 2015, the team undertook a campaign and the Indian flag made by Savarkar himself, was hoisted at the smarak in Himachal Pradesh on August 23. It is an unnamed peak in the Batal-based Spiti Valley at Karcha Nala in the Himalayas and has been climbed by a group of enthusiasts. Under the leadership of Devendra Gandre and Rajendra Varadkar, this campaign was successfully carried out by seven people and this peak is now known as 'Shikhar Savarkar'.
This year marks the 5 years of the incident, and on the occasion of this anniversary, Shikhar Savarkar Mountaineering Award, Durg Samvardhak Sanstha and a Lifetime Achievement Award were announced by the team, for the first time.
Praising Col. Premchand, Fortmer Mumbai High Court judge Mridula Bhatkar said that Mountaineering is not just a sport or an activity, it is a philosophy of life and requires strong will, fearless mind, mental strength and a strong body. Colonel Premchand stepped on the peak with these qualities and made a very important contribution in mountaineering. He was the hero of the Kanchanganga summit campaign.
