Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s birth anniversary falls on January 23, and on the occasion, the Sena will perform the bhoomipujan of Bal Thackeray memorial at the mayor’s bungalow in Shivaji Park.

The Balasaheb Thackeray Memorial Public Trust headed by Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray will take possession of the 11,551-sqm plot at Shivaji Park in Dadar this week.

Soon, the trust will invite bids to design the memorial for the late Sena supremo. Shashi Prabhu, noted architect and a member of the memorial’s trust said that as the mayor is moving out, all trustees and Uddhav Thackeray will visit the plot on January 23 and officially take possession. He added that the memorial will be underground to not disturb the look of the plot.

In the month of November, the Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) handed over the bungalow to the Trust and subsequently, inked an agreement, which will allow them to start work.

The party wanted the actual work on the memorial to start ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the Sena has been facing criticism from the opposition for delaying the memorial construction, six years after the death of the party’s founder.
