BMC awards ₹60 Cr project to Skyway Infraprojects Pvt Ltd for Phase II of the redevelopment of Byculla Zoo

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be spending ₹60 crore on phase II of the redevelopment of the Veermata Jeejabai Bhonsale Udyan in Byculla. This phase involves the construction of new animal enclosures and will also introduce new animals such as Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Sloth Bear, Jackal, Wolf.

The civic body has shortlisted Skyway Infraprojects Pvt Ltd for the same and has awarded the ₹60.19-crore project to carry out the redevelopment work, which is expected to be complete in six months. Once the new enclosures are built, new animals like the lion, tiger, leopard, swamp deer will be brought in using Central government funds.

Apart from constructing new enclosures, there will be animal-holding areas, animal exercise areas, viewing areas, water bodies, artistic acrylic works on glass, which will act as a barrier to keep visitors away from the animals. Along with this, the authorities are also planning to upgrade the landscaped garden, improve quality of water in enclosures housing aquatic animals, build a separate room for security officials and a drinking water facility.

At present, the zoo is home to 350 animals which include seven Humboldt penguins which were brought from South Korea as part of the first phase of redevelopment.
