Travellers waiting to get into their trains at the Mumbai Central railway station could soon be able to experience the comfort of the sophisticated sleeping pods at economical rates, reported the Indian Express. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRTC) is anticipated to commence the service that enables travellers to get a bed as well as a range of other services in the shape of capsule sleeping pods on an hourly basis, that should be up and running in two weeks.

According to the account, the pods have been originated in Japan and are quite popular abroad. This is because it enables travellers to seek accommodation at economical rates in contrast to the usual hotels. The report quoted, Group General Manager of West Zone, IRCTC, Rahul Himalian who elaborated on how the work on the initial pod of the IRCTC is in the end stages and it is slated to launch the service from October last week, prior to the festival and the eve of New Year at the Mumbai Central station of Western Railways. Adding that an official announcement on it will be made soon. He further stated that they look to offer quality accommodation services to all types of travellers that comprise backpackers, overnight stayers in a clean and comfortable environment. However, the cost is yet to be proclaimed.

Based on the narrative, apart from the usual facilities, services such as air conditioners, key card access, WiFi, clean washrooms and CCTV surveillance. 48 pods at the Mumbai Central railway station will entail 30 classic pods, seven only for women, 10 private ones and one that is disabled-friendly which can hold two people.

In addition to this, five just shower units will also be put together. The authority is looking to put up 32 sleeping pods at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) along with 48 at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). Apart from this, the Central Railways on Monday initiated the restaurant on wheels concept.
