The space under flyovers in Navi Mumbai will soon have open gyms and other sports facilities as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to use these areas wisely thereby protecting from encroachment.

A report published in the Hindustan Times regarding the same stated that this will be first-of-a-kind project in the district. However, the municipal corporation has previously developed sports facilities like open gyms, jogging tracks, etc. in the past which has benefitted citizens from the nearby areas. Moreover, the space under the bridges in Nerul's Sector 21 and 46 were previously utilised for open gyms, however, facilities like table tennis and volleyball will be added in the new project making it first in the locality.

Funds worth INR 60 lakhs have been approved for the project. Officials had drafted a plan to start the project from Nerul and Sanpada, of which the work at flyovers in Nerul has been completed, however, the project in Sanpada will begin post approvals. Survey will be conducted by the concerned departments to select more such flyovers where the priority will be to select bridges in and around residential areas keeping the safety aspects of the visitors in mind.

Sharing more information, the city engineer of NMMC, Sanjay Desai, told the publication that the flyovers in Navi Mumbai have such spaces which are not being used wisely due to which several groups encroach the same for personal activities and use.
