Maharashtra Drug Regulator Issues Notices To Amazon, Flipkart Over Alleged Unauthorised Selling Of Pregnancy Termination Pills

On Thursday, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Authority (FDA) said it has issued notices to e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart after it allegedly found that pregnancy termination kits and pills are available for sale on these platforms without prescription.

The FDA had recieved a complaint from a drug dealer from Pune. As per the complain e-commerce companies were selling abortion kits and pills illegally and it also claimed that the online sale of abortion kits was happening without any restrictions. As man as 34 websites were checked by the FDA officials to verify the complaint. FDA officials placed orders for these pills and kits guise as customers. It was noted that by the officials that the online companies accepted the order without asking for a doctor's prescription.

As per the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, online distribution of these medications without prescription is prohibited, said a statement from the regulator. However, the statement does not give out more details about the notice that has been sent to Flipkart, Amazon and other e-commerce companies.
