There is currently no speed limit on Mumbai's coastal roads and no cameras to monitor speed. Therefore, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install speed detection cameras at 28 places on this route with the help of Mumbai Traffic Police to curb speeding, as per the report by Maharashtra Times. This work will be done through the L & T company. The proposal in this regard will soon be sent to the Municipal Commissioner for approval and the cameras will be installed by the end of December.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is being constructed from Princes Street flyover to Bandra Worli end of Worli Sea Link. The first phase of this i.e. Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk (Worli) Marine Drive south channel in Worli was opened on March 11, 2024. The stretch from Marine Drive to Haji Ali Marg Lotus Junction started on June 10, while the three-and-a-half km stretch from Haji Ali to Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Marg started on July 11. Then on September 13, the south side channel connecting the Bandra-Worli Sea Bridge was inaugurated. This has made it possible to travel directly from Princes Street to Bandra.
Speed limit of 80 kmph is allowed on Mumbai Coastal Road and 60 kmph through the tunnel. Speed limit boards are also posted at various places. CCTV cameras have been installed every 50 to 100 metres to monitor vehicles in the tunnel. However, the camera system in the tunnel to take action against speeding vehicles and lane cutting vehicles has not yet started. It can only monitor the movement of vehicles. Until speed detection cameras are installed on all routes, the system in the tunnel will not be operational.
Against this backdrop, speed detection cameras will be installed at 28 places to curb drivers who violate the speed limit and cause accidents, a senior official said. This work will be done through L&T company. Currently this proposal is with the Accounts Department of Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
That's what cameras will do
-These cameras will be installed near the entrance of the tunnel as well as at other places
-If a vehicle is speeding, this camera will instantly record its vehicle number
-His information will be sent to the traffic police and an e-challan will be issued.
-This information will go to the driver's mobile.
-With the help of this camera, it will also be possible to take action on lane crossing, driving in the opposite direction.
At present there is no CCTV camera anywhere on the sea coast route except the tunnel. There are 81 cameras in the tunnel. It has 12 CCTVs and 69 video incident cameras. It has a system that can capture the movements of vehicles and accidents very closely. Apart from the speed detection camera, more than one hundred such video incident cameras will be installed.
