On Monday, May 31, the state election commission gave a go-ahead to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to hold the civic polls in February 2022.

Amidst the second wave of the coronavirus, the BMC had last week sought clarification on the schedule. Meanwhile, the state election commission held a meeting on Monday. According to sources, the commission instructed the authorities to prepare for the elections during the meeting. Moreover, preparations will begin with the reorganization of the ward.

The civic polls were last conducted in February 2017. The Shiv Sena has a majority of corporators (97), followed by BJP (82), Congress (30) and other smaller parties. In addition, the BMC is to now study the models and patterns of five states – Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry – where Assembly elections were conducted recently. The officials are also touted to study the gram panchayat elections conducted in Maharashtra earlier this year. The preparations will be undertaken considering the 2011 census, as the 2021 census is delayed due to the pandemic.

On the other hand, the recently instituted Mumbai Parking Authority (MPA) of the BMC has obtained the approval of the standing committee, paving the way for its implementation. The standing committee was chaired by Yashwant Jadhav. The MPA will be chaired by Additional Municipal Commissioner P Velrasu and will look to begin works across three BMC wards as a pilot project.

Officials said that when the plan is fully implemented, citizens can book parking spaces via online portals including mobile phones, adding that new parking prices will be in place as well.
