The state government has received a request from the Maharashtra Students’ Union (MASU) to permit students below the age of 18 to use the local train services considering they can’t meet the compulsory condition of receiving a coronavirus vaccination. This has made it impossible for many of them to attend physical classes at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) wherein many 10 pass students are studying, highlighted a report by the Hindustan Times. At present, only those who are fully vaccinated and have completed 14 days are allowed to utilize the local train services in the city.

MASU, Secretary, Arun Chavan, based on the account elaborated that since the commencement of the new academic year, many ITIs have called their pupils for in-person classes, but the student’s demand to use the train services have fallen on deaf ears. He added that this has resulted in many being unable to attend lectures since they don’t have access to adequate transport facilities.

Currently, 976 ITIs in Maharashtra, both government and private, provide 146,000 seats for vocational training in plumbing, electrical repairs, amongst others. Many choose to study these after passing their 10th grade.

Last year in November, these students were asked to sit for physical classes in their institutions for practical examinations. A considerable portion of these curriculums is based on practical sessions for which physical classes become vital. However, pupils find it arduous to travel to their institutes.

Students and institutions akin have voiced their discontent, stated the report.
