Vashi's APMC Fruit market reopens after 9 days

After a break of nearly nine days, Vashi Agriculture Produce Market Committee's (APMC) fruit market resumed operations on Monday, April 20. While the market has now started functioning and this may help in easing supply issues that people across Mumbai were facing but there are a few restrictions in still in place. One such restriction is that vehicles will be allowed in this market now in between 9 pm to 5 am only.

After the market resumed traders sold 765 tons of fruits in a single day.  Sanjay Pansare, direct, Mumbai APMC has shared that on April 20, approximately 250 vehicles had brought fruits into the market. These include 100 vehicles for transporting mangoes, 70 vehicles for oranges and sweet limes, 15 vehicles for grapes, 15 vehicles for papaya, 5 vehicles for chikoo, 15 vehicles for pineapple, 15 vehicles for watermelon, 5 vehicles for pomegranates and 10 vehicles for imported fruits.

The onion and potato market, and vegetables and food grains market had resumed operations last week itself after minister Eknath Shinde intervened.

 The markets were shut down from April 11 following a scare among traders and Mathadi workers about the spread of COVID-19. They complained that social distancing norms were not being followed by visitors to the market.

The APMC Market is the largest supplier of fruit, vegetables, food grains, spices to the city. It not only caters to smaller market across the city but also provides supplies to retailers, caterers and the hotel industry.

Anil Chavan, secretary, Mumbai APMC, stated that the wholesale fruit market has been allowed to function subject to conditions of social distancing norms being followed by the visitors. He added that as of now, only 250 vehicles will be permitted inside the market and wholesale buyers who make purchases not less than ₹15,000 will only be allowed to enter the market.
