According to the latest reports, the Supreme Court (SC) is likely to hear on Friday, July 29, a plea challenging the cutting of trees in Aarey Colony for the construction of the Mumbai Metro 3 car shed.

Based on accounts, on Thursday, July 28, a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant agreed to hear the petition. This is when senior advocate Gopal Shankarnarayanan stated the matter, emphasizing that the felling of trees was on through the night, in spite of earlier stay order by the SC.

The lawyer was quoted in narratives elaborating on how they have photographs and thus pushed for an immediate hearing on Friday. He claimed that JCB machines would otherwise be deployed over the weekend. He reportedly added that the matter was mentioned by him before the Chief Justice of India who directed him towards this bench.

Reports suggest that he was citing a 2019 suo moto order by the SC which had taken cognizance of a letter petition to the CJI by a law student, restraining any more cutting of trees in Aarey Colony in Mumbai's Goregoan. This was believed to be after submission by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the state government that no further trees will be cut.
