Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to build 1,168 community toilets in Mumbai. Currently, there are 87,422 latrines in use in 7,212 toilets in the city.

Moreover, the BMC has decided to take action against people who defecate in the open with a fine of ₹100. The operation was carried out by a cleanup marshal. In addition, awareness was spread through various mediums such as meetings and street plays, however, the picture is not yet free from accountability. Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, it was proposed to construct 22,774 latrines in a total of 1,168 community toilets through the Vasti Sanitation Program Department in order to make Mumbai city tax free. However, only 2,820 latrines have been constructed in 139 community toilets. Also, the construction of 13,998 latrines in 577 community toilets is in progress.

Meanwhile, the BMC wants suggestions from its citizens as the construction of 13,998 toilet seats in 577 community toilets is in progress. The BMC further wants suggestions from citizens for what more can be done by the civic body to achieve the tag of an open defecation free city. As the BMC had earlier failed to get the certificate for 'Open Defecation Free' city, the civic body has applied for the same this year again. While doing so, the corporation is expecting the participation of citizens as it has invited suggestions and objections for making Mumbai cleaner.
