The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Saturday, July 1, opened the bridge over the canal at Rabodi, K Villa Garden, in Thane for vehicular traffic to help ease traffic congestion on the strategic road from Holy Cross School to Central Maidan.

Considering the flood situation and traffic congestion during monsoon, TMC chief Abhijit Bangar decided to construct a bridge over the canal and directed the authorities to complete it at the earliest.

Accordingly, TMC had undertaken the work of widening the bridge on the drain in the month of January this year.

Bangar said, “The length of the bridge is 20 meters and width is 21 meters. The total cost of the project is expected to be ₹2.75 crore. Currently, the main water channel on the bridge has been shifted, thus opening it for traffic. Another channel will be shifted after monsoon.”

“There is a drain under the old road with a British-era arch. The road and bridge were widened in 1995-96. However, the portion of the bridge over the canal in the middle remained intact. The original narrow channel was further narrowed by advancing service channels and resulted in accumulation of debris. Due to this, water was accumulated in the area during the rainy season. Now after cleaning the drains, there will be no water accumulation,” Bangar said.
