The initiative was announced following meetings between TMC officials, idol makers, and representatives of public Ganesh festival committees under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. The civic body has urged sculptors to submit applications within the stipulated deadline so that adequate clay supply and workshop space can be arranged in advance.
According to civic officials, vacant plots across various wards in Thane will be identified and allotted free of cost to artisans creating idols using eco-friendly materials. The move is aimed at encouraging a shift away from Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols, which have faced criticism for causing environmental pollution during immersion.
The TMC said the initiative aligns with environmental guidelines issued by courts and pollution control authorities. Officials believe providing free raw material and workspace will help reduce production costs for sculptors and make eco-friendly idols more affordable for citizens.
Authorities have appealed to idol makers to approach their respective ward offices and complete the application process at the earliest. The corporation has also been conducting awareness drives and workshops to encourage residents and Ganesh mandals to adopt sustainable practices during the festival season.
The initiative is part of Thane Municipal Corporation’s broader efforts to promote green celebrations and reduce the environmental impact of Ganeshotsav across the city.
