Following the devastating fire at the Gaondevi Market in Thane, the municipal corporation has announced compensation for the victims and relief measures for affected traders.

At an emergency meeting held under the instructions of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Thane Municipal Corporation decided to provide INR 10 lakh compensation each to the families of the two civic workers who lost their lives in the blaze. Injured personnel will receive IR 1 lakh each.

The meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar, MP Naresh Mhaske, and other senior officials.

A massive fire broke out at the Gaondevi vegetable market on Gokhale Road in Naupada, Thane, in the early hours of May 21, 2026. The blaze reportedly started around 3:30–3:45 am and quickly spread through the crowded two-storey market complex, destroying nearly 155 shops and stalls. Preliminary reports suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire.  A security guard, Kalu Gadekar, and firefighter Sagar Shinde died due to suffocation while rescue operations were underway. Several firefighters were also injured.

The government has assured assistance to affected traders, and the civic body plans to restore and rehabilitate the market area at the earliest.
