Instead of bringing idols made of plaster of paris, devotees should use idols made using natural resources like shadu soil, clay etc. Also, maximum use of environmentally friendly, chemical-free tools that decompose naturally. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has appealed to the citizens to completely avoid the use of plastic and thermocol.



In the February meeting of the Technical Committee of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, all Municipal Corporations and Municipalities have been given instructions in this regard. Relevant directions have been issued under section '33A' of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. In it, there are suggestions to raise public awareness for citizens to use more eco-friendly resources. Also, there are instructions to strictly follow the revised guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board in May-2020 regarding discharge system, clean water management.

Arrangements for immersion of idols between artificial ponds, large water tanks should be made on a large scale. Also, it has been clarified in this directive that these immersed idols should be arranged in a scientific manner within 24 hours. Such temporary disposal arrangements should also be made near lakes, river banks etc. Also, the directive also said that idol collection centres should be started during immersion during the festival.


As per these directives, Thane Municipal Corporation arranges disposal. The revised directives will also be properly implemented. Recently, the Municipal Corporation held a meeting of sculptors in this regard. It has also called for the use of Shadu soil for idols, said Manisha Pradhan, Chief Environment Officer of the Municipal Corporation.
