According to sources, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown, the financial position of the Thane Municipal Corporation has been compromised.

In view of the situation, the civic body has decided to take aggressive steps in order to increase their income. Moreover, municipal squads will be knocking on the door of 6,248 arrears of property tax arrears of over INR 50,000. In addition, the property of those who evade paying taxes will be confiscated. So far, INR 493 crores of property tax and INR 115 crores of water bills have been recovered.

On the other hand, the Thane district will have to face water shortage for the next few months as the civic body has planned to store water from the dams in the district till July 15. For this, the Minor Irrigation Department has decided to implement 14 per cent water cut in Thane due to which the water supply to cities in the district will be cut off twice a month for 24 hours. Moreover, water storage in two dams, Andhra and Baravi in Thane district were surveyed both of which have a total storage capacity of 357.28 million cubic meters.

The STEM Authority, MIDC and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran have been directed to cut off water supply till July 15. The Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran in Ambernath and Badlapur will have water cuts on Mondays in the second and fourth week of every month, while in Kalyan-Dombivali city on Tuesdays.
