According to the latest reports, nearly 300 chickens died abruptly at a poultry farm in Maharashtra’s Thane district’s Shahapur tehsil in the Vehloli village on Thursday, February 17. Accounts have quoted Rajesh Narvekar, Thane district collector elaborating on how those bird’s samples have been sent to a lab in Pune. They will be doing so to explore the possibility of bird flu.

Based on accounts, Narvekar elaborated on how they have sealed an area of a one-kilometre radius near the poultry farm. Apart from this, they have begun culling chickens and destroying them as a precautionary measure.

Presently, he said the illness is confined to the said area. It has been reported that the process to cull nearly 15,000 birds has begun a Thane administration official said, stated reports.

Located near the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway, Vehloli is 69 km from Mumbai and has a population of 296 families comprising 1,697 people.

Narratives are doing the rounds that a year ago, bird flu had affected almost six districts in Maharashtra. This was especially the case in Nandurbar district’s Nawapur area. This was believed to have been caused due to migratory birds.

Owing to the said incident, over 10 lakh birds were culled back then. Before this, a magnanimous bird flu wave had struck Maharashtra in 2006.
