Soon, animal lovers will be able to take care of their pets and animals with the help of Thane SPCA who are planning to open an intensive care unit (ICU). They have started the construction and if things go well, it will be operational in a week.

Debashish Majumdar, vice-president at Thane SPCA told Times of India,

On a daily basis, we get a lot of stray and wild animals who suffer from burns after getting electrocuted or who have met with accidents. In such cases, even after they are operated in time, it is important to keep them under observation and to keep checking their condition. So, to meet these needs we will be starting an ICU in our hospital. The ICU will be able to cater to two small animals at a time.”

In the ICU, the animals will be monitored by a veterinarian and they will be kept in isolation in an AC room so that they don't catch any infection.

Earlier, we were having difficulties to keep animals who were critical. After an operation, they would be kept in the operation theatre, which was not feasible, especially at times when there is another operation," Debashish Majumdar.

Many of the local NGOs and animal lovers are happy with SPCA’s move of bringing in an ICU as they feel they will be able to save more lives.

Aditya Patil, president of Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) to TOI

Most of the times when we rescue wild birds or monkeys, they have been badly injured by burns or accidents. In such situations, they are in a serious condition and after administering first aid, there is a need to shift them in other private hospitals so that they are operated upon and kept under observation, but while sifting them, at times, their health starts deteriorating. Also, there are no such centers facilitated by the forest department and this ICU might help decrease the number of fatalities.”
