The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a big step towards the rehabilitation of Mumbai's slums. In a meeting on Tuesday, March 5, at Mantralaya, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a collaboration with the Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA). The goal is to rehabilitate approximately 15,000 tenements in Ghatkopar East's Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar.

In addition to the rehabilitation project, MMRDA will also undertake a project called "Slum Free Thane." This project will clear large areas of occupied government land and provide new homes for the current slum dwellers.

The state government has had plans to transform one of Mumbai's oldest slums in Ghatkopar East into a modern residential and commercial area. The 75-acre slum was established in the early 1960s. Kamaraj Nagar, also part of the plan, covers approximately 46 acres.

This will be the largest rehabilitation project after the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Additionally, it will also relocate 2000 slums between the eastern and western express highways. The goal will be to extend the eastern freeway up to Thane. It will also allow the widening of eastern and western express highways.

The SRA will conduct a survey of the slum inhabitants and transfer control of the vacant land to the MMRDA. This is part of MMRDA's main task. The task is to build infrastructure, including flyovers, metros, and roads.

This will be the first slum redevelopment project that MMRDA will work on. The project is necessary for MMRDA to generate revenue from the sale of land. This is because it is facing financial difficulties due to the money allocated for infrastructure projects. MMRDA is currently in charge of 10 metro projects in Mumbai.

The meeting also talked about modern bus depots. These depots will be built on property owned by Thane Transport Service under the Thane Municipal Corporation.

The state government is planning similar agreements with BMC, MHADA, TMC, CIDCO, and other parties to push forward delayed slum redevelopment projects in MMR. The detailed project report (DPR) for this has already been prepared by MMRDA.

Many other projects were also approved. They include the Balkum to Gaymukh Thane Coastal Road, the 8.25-kilometre elevated road from Anand Nagar, the eastern freeway extension from Chheda Nagar, Ghatkopar to Thane, and the building of a bridge between Gaymukh and Payegaon. The MMRDA has authorised the outer ring road project in Kalyan and has allotted INR 39 crore for it.

MMRDA chairperson CM Eknath Shinde, chief secretary Dr. Nitin Karir, metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, additional chief secretary of housing development Valsa Nair Singh, and principal secretary of the department of urban development Asim Gupta.
