The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is going to bring a new policy to build more pay and use toilets in Mumbai. The construction of pay and use toilets was suspended for the last four years. But keeping in mind the increasing population, this scheme will now be implemented in a new form. Roadside public toilets and restrooms in Mumbai are run by organisations on a 'pay and use' basis. However, four years ago, the civic body suspended the construction of pay and use toilets after complaints of unsanitary conditions and looting of citizens. Currently there are 850 pay and use toilets in Mumbai. But more toilets will have to be built for the growing population. Therefore, the solid waste department has decided to formulate a policy.

Under this scheme, an organisation would select a site by itself and propose to the municipality to construct a toilet at that place. Permission was granted if the proposal was deemed feasible. According to this system, the toilet was owned by the municipality, but maintained by the organisation.

What about policy?

The toilets will be constructed in a modern manner. One toilet will be reserved for the disabled. There will be a ramp for entry. Toilets will be kept open 24 hours in crowded places. Also, the policy will make important provisions in terms of levying fees, compliance with sanitation norms and action against contractors, the officials said.
