The Chief Minister reviewed the ports development department in a meeting held at the Council of Ministers’ hall in the Vidhan Bhavan today. Fisheries and Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane was also present. Fadnavis instructed that a detailed project report (DPR) be prepared for the shipyard and that land for the project be finalized.
He also emphasised the development of Jaigad, Revdanda, and Vijaydurg ports and urged the early completion of the Vaibhavwadi–Kolhapur railway line to facilitate port growth. The state government’s financial participation for this route should be ensured. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation is currently developing a highway from Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Nashik, and planning should take into account the regions on both sides of this route. Investors should be attracted considering the importance of port development.
Currently, Maharashtra handles 18 million passengers annually across 36 ferry routes, with 16 million passengers using the 21 ferry routes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Under the proposed Mumbai Water Metro project, 21 terminals will be constructed covering a 200 nautical mile network. The boats for the project will be fully electric, with hybrid models used initially and new boats purchased subsequently. The Mumbai Water Metro will surpass even Kochi in scale, and a detailed project report is already being prepared, the Chief Minister said.
