Security has been stepped up at Chinchpokli and Currey Road railway stations in Mumbai ahead of Ganeshotsav, with large crowds expected to visit the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja and Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani pandals.
The Railway Police have deployed additional personnel at the two stations to manage crowds and maintain security during the festival. Around 450 additional Home Guards have been deployed this year, while nearly 250 officers and personnel have been assigned specifically for crowd management and special train operations.
At Chinchpokli and Currey Road stations, 219 Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and 55 ticket-checking staff have been deployed. Their responsibilities include regulating passenger movement, managing crowds and taking action against passengers travelling without valid tickets.
Security has also been strengthened at major railway stations including CSMT, Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Thane, Panvel, Diva, Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus and Kalyan.
Dog squads comprising Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Dobermans have also been deployed. The teams are conducting checks on local and long-distance trains and are being used to detect explosives, narcotics and suspicious objects.
Mumbai’s 139 suburban railway stations handle an estimated 75-80 lakh passengers every day, making crowd and security management particularly important during the festival period.
Railway authorities have urged commuters to immediately alert the RPF, Railway Police or station authorities if they notice any suspicious object or activity. Passengers can also contact the railway helpline number 139 for assistance.
