Currently, liquor shops are allowed to remain open till 11 pm or 12 am. These timings are going to be relaxed for December 24, 25 and 31. If a person consumes alcohol in public place, he will have to pay a fine of ₹5,000 or face one month of imprisonment.

Addressing the same, Prajakta Varma, Commissioner of state excise said, “We have decided to allow liquor and wine shops to operate till 1.30am and permit rooms to operate till 5am so that everyone can enjoy the festive season.”

Shivanand Shetty, president of Indian Hotels and Restaurant Association (AHAR) further added, “We welcome this move by the government. Mumbai is a city that loves to party and the party-goers will have a good time this year too. This move is not only great for party-goers but also great for the hotel and restaurant business.”

It was a common practice for people to buy liquor illegally if the shops were closed. However, these liquors are of substandard quality and can pose a threat to one's health. In order to avoid illegal selling of liquor, AHAR has allowed the extension in time.
