The state government, along with CIDCO, has decided to build Metro Line 8 to connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) with the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This corridor will give Navi Mumbai’s suburbs direct Metro connectivity for the first time and provide the city with its own internal Metro system. A total of 11 stations have been proposed on this line.
After receiving approval from the state government, a detailed report of Metro Line 8 has been prepared, outlining the proposed route and stations. After crossing the Vashi Creek Bridge from Mankhurd, this Metro will join the Sion–Panvel Highway. The route will then pass through Nerul, Seawoods, and Ulwe, finally reaching the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Metro 8 has now been included in MMRDA’s 337-km Metro network. Earlier, the project was planned to be jointly implemented by CIDCO and MMRDA. However, the entire responsibility of execution has now been given to CIDCO.
The project will be developed under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model. With NMIA expected to start operations around December 25, Metro 8 will play a crucial role in handling the increasing traffic in the region. This line will make direct travel from Mumbai to NMIA much easier and significantly reduce travel time between the two airports.
Proposed stations:
Vashi, Sanpada, Juinagar, Nerul Sector 1, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Sagar Sangam, Targhar/Moha, NMIA West, and NMIA Terminal 2 (with two stations inside the airport campus).
After entering Navi Mumbai from Mankhurd, Metro 8 will run along the Sion–Panvel Highway through Vashi, Sanpada, and Juinagar.
From the LP Junction in Nerul, the route will turn inward with a major station near Dr. D.Y. Patil University.
Passing through Nerul–Seawoods, the line will include stations near Wonders Park, the Apollo Hospital area, and behind the NMMC headquarters before moving toward Ulwe.
The Sagar Sangam and Targhar/Moha stations will serve the rapidly developing Ulwe node. The Metro will then enter the airport campus and terminate at NMIA West and the final NMIA Terminal 2 station.
