The Mumbai Police have registered a case against the unidentified drivers of six to seven high-end cars for allegedly overspeeding and driving recklessly inside the Coastal Road tunnel near Marine Drive, putting the lives of other motorists and themselves at risk.
The incident took place at around 11.15 pm on September 3, 2026, on the southbound carriageway of the Mumbai Coastal Road. A video showing several luxury and performance cars speeding together inside the tunnel later surfaced on social media and went viral.
According to the police, the vehicles were travelling as a group and allegedly failed to follow traffic rules while moving at excessive speeds. The cars reportedly included a black Lamborghini, yellow BMW M2, red BMW Z4 and Volkswagen Virtus, among other vehicles.
Police said the manner in which the cars were being driven created a potential danger to other road users travelling through the tunnel.
The video was reportedly recorded by journalist Sana Khan, who was travelling with her family when the vehicles sped past them.
Khan said the incident was frightening and noted that the usual speed limit on the stretch is 60 kmph. After posting the footage on social media, she thanked the Mumbai Police for taking prompt action and urged authorities to take strict action against motorists who endanger others for entertainment.
Following the incident, Police Head Constable Satish Nivrutti Sangle, 42, attached to the Marine Drive Police Station, lodged a complaint.
The FIR was registered on September 4 at around 10.55 pm under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The provisions relate to dangerous or negligent driving and conduct that can put the life or personal safety of others at risk.
Investigators have reportedly identified the vehicles seen in the video but have not yet confirmed the identities of the drivers. Police are examining available evidence, including CCTV footage from the Coastal Road tunnel and nearby areas, to establish who was behind the wheel.
Authorities are also expected to take the identified vehicles into custody as part of the investigation.
No arrests had been made at the time of reporting. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over dangerous driving and speeding on Mumbai's high-speed road infrastructure. Racing or reckless driving on public roads can put not only the drivers but also unsuspecting motorists and passengers at serious risk.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and identify all those allegedly involved.
