Three commuters were killed and one sustained serious injuries on Thursday evening after being hit by a train near Sandhurst Road station. The tragedy occurred around 7 PM, when many passengers were forced to walk along the tracks due to severe overcrowding and disruption of suburban train services following a sudden protest by railway employees.

According to officials, two victims died on the spot, while the third succumbed to injuries during treatment at JJ Hospital. One injured commuter remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The disruption began after Central Railway employees launched a flash strike between 5:50 PM and 6:45 PM, protesting the registration of an FIR against two engineers in connection with the June 9 Mumbra train accident. During the protest at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), motormen and train managers refused to operate services, causing major delays and heavy crowding during rush hour.

Train operations resumed later in the evening after senior officials assured the protesters that they would take up the matter with state authorities. Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Swapnil Nila, confirmed that the protest had severely impacted evening suburban services, which normally handle several lakh commuters daily.

Background: The Mumbra Accident

The June 9 Mumbra incident had claimed four lives when two local trains one headed toward Kasara and another toward CSMT crossed each other on a sharp curve. Some commuters standing on the footboards fell onto the tracks after their backpacks brushed against each other.

Following an investigation, the Thane Railway Police charged a senior section engineer and a section engineer under sections 125(a) and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for acts endangering life or personal safety. Thursday’s protest by railway unions was in opposition to these charges.
