Even though the cases of coronavirus in Thane has been on a rise, the municipal administration on Tuesday, October 13 permitted shops and markets in Thane to operate from 7 am to 9:30 PM.

However, this has brought relief to the consumers, which includes the traders on the eve of Dussehra and Diwali. Earlier, hotels, food courts, restaurants and liquor stores in the municipal area were allowed to remain open till 11.30 pm. As a consequence, there was resentment among traders. In view of the situation, the corporation decided to keep shops, markets and vegetable markets open till 9.30 pm.

Due to the constant demands of the citizens of Thane and the traders, permission has been given to start shops in phases which are subjected to terms and conditions. The earlier directive to close the shops after 7 pm was implemented by the Municipal Corporation, which was a big blow to the traders. There were demands from traders as well as political and social organizations to give traders more time. Against this backdrop, a delegation of traders from Thane met the mayor on Monday. During the meeting, the mayor discussed with Eknath Shinde, Minister of Urban Development and Public Works, about permitting the shops to extend their working hours.
