Although the number of coronavirus cases has been rising on a daily basis, the education department of the central government has issued guidelines allowing the schools to reopen from October 15. The central government said that the state government can take a decision on reopening schools, colleges in a graded manner. 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the school education department to take stock of the COVID-19 situation. It was decided that the schools in the state will restart only after Diwali in November and not this month. 

A cabinet meeting on October 7 was chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to discuss various issues including reopening of schools in Maharashtra. As the online learning in ongoing, the schools can reopen after Diwali in November, the CM said. 

With the upcoming festive season between October and December, the number of coronavirus cases are likely to increase and starting schools now can be unsafe for students. The government will take a decision on reopening schools after taking a stock of the COVID-19 situation post-Diwali.  

According to the guidelines issued by the centre, the schools can reopen in a graded manner. States and Union Territories (UTs) have been asked to prepare SOPs. 

Earlier, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant clarified that no schools and colleges will start in the state unless the coronavirus threat is under control. He said that the situation is not appropriate to start physical classes in schools and colleges due to the coronavirus pandemic.
