The Narendra Modi government passed three agriculture bills - Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, Amendment to 1955 Essential Commodities Act - which are being opposed by farmers, especially in Punjab and Haryana.

Although Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar earlier said that the farm bills won’t be implemented in the state, the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government is yet to take a final call.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray recently held a meeting with farmer leaders to understand their views and decide government’s policy on the newly cleared agriculture bills. Along with leaders from farmers’ associations, Maharashtra Ministers Ajit Pawar, Balasaheb Thorat, Ashok Chavan, Chhagan Bhujbal, Jayant Patil, Dadaji Bhuse, Sunil Kedar, Balasaheb Patil and other senior government officials were present for the meeting at Sahyadri Guest House.

The Chief Minister said that there was a need to rectify ‘errors and omissions’ in the legislation passed by the central government. The suggestions made by the farmers’ representatives will be discussed, he added.

"Our role is to come together for the benefit of farmers, regardless of which party we belong to. We are not against the central government but we also don’t want to blindly support these laws. Errors and omissions in these laws need to be rectified. Before enacting these laws, it is necessary to take everyone into confidence and at least discuss with the farmers' organisations in advance. We are not against development or reform. However, there was a need to exchange experiences on the implementation of previous laws related to farmers,” Thackeray asserted.

The decision regarding the implementation of these farm laws will be taken by preparing a plan considering the suggestions and opinions put forward by the representatives of the farmers' associations, the Chief Minister said.
