The central government on Monday issued a Standard of Procedure (SOP) allowing the reopening of schools from October 15. This comes amid the rising number of coronavirus cases across the country.

The decision of the Education Department to reopen schools has sparked speculations that the schools and colleges will also restart in Maharashtra. However, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant clarified that no schools and colleges will start in the state unless the coronavirus threat is over.

Samant said that the situation is not appropriate to start physical classes in schools and colleges due to the coronavirus pandemic. The minister was speaking in a press conference after the review meeting with officials of the Savitribai Phule Pune University.

Sawant informed that both online and offline examinations will be conducted by the universities and special care will be taken to ensure student’s safety. “Every student who takes the offline test will be screened. Their health will be taken care of. All universities are committed to delivering examinations and results on time,” the minister said.

The Maharashtra government will not be in a hurry to start the college and steps are being taken to ensure that the coronavirus pandemic ends, Samant said while adding that the colleges and schools will remain close to protect the health of the students.

The schools and colleges across the country have been shut since March this year due to the coronavirus lockdown.
