Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day-long lockdown across the country from 12:00 AM on March 25 in order to tackle the ongoing coronavirus crisis. The total number of cases of the coronavirus or COVID-19 in India has risen to 606 while the death toll stands at 10 deaths. Out of these, 553 are active cases. Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state with 125 positive COVID-19 cases.

As soon as the lockdown was announced, people rushed to nearby kirana stores and milk shops to stock on daily essentials. People were also seen stocking up fruits and vegetables. In between all the price of tomatoes soared to Rs 100 per kg.

On Wednesday morning, a vegetable vendor in Dadar told that they have very little supply of tomato and most of them are selling it for Rs 80-100 per kg. He said most vendors had sold what they had yesterday itself and today morning the supply was less than what they get every day.

Another vegetable seller in Kandivali told to us, "Tomatoes are retailing for Rs 60-70 per kg. However, as people are in a rush to buy and not bargaining much some vegetable vendors are making most of the situation by selling it for as much Rs 100 per kg."

People in Goregaon too shared that they were able to get tomatoes for Rs 95 to 100 per kg. While in the wholesale market tomatoes were selling for as much as Rs 40-60 per kg.

Despite repetitive assurance by Cheif Minister and central government, people are hoarding on to things and tomatoes are no different. The last night's panic buying has added to the same and made the price of tomatoes soar to this level. However, the big question is that in the midst of all that is happening, isn't the rising price of tomatoes a matter of concern?

Let us know if you are able to find tomatoes easily in the market near you and at what price. Send your answers to content@MumbaiLive.com or tweet to us @MumbaiLiveNews.
