The retail price of tomato in several areas in Mumbai have already crossed INR 150 per kg on Tuesday, July 4. Traders said that the supply is not improving, moreover, the quality has also deteriorated due to the monsoon.

Tomato prices have been increasing since last fortnight. However, on the wholesale front, after crossing INR 100, it reached INR 125 to INR 130 per kg. Vegetable traders in APMC market, Navi Mumbai, are expressing concerns that if tomato production does not increase in the coming days, the prices may further surge to exceed INR 150-200 per kilogram.

This translates into INR 16-17 for a single fruit. Even the small, raw, or partially yellow tomatoes cost INR 120.

In Borivali, Powai, Matunga, Breach Candy, Pedder Road, Altamount Road, Khar and Bandra West, roadside stalls and shops sold tomato for Rs 160 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in Andheri Lokhandwala, Nerul in Navi Mumbai and Kalwa in Thane, vendors quoted INR 120.

Aside from tomato, the price of other vegetables also continues to soar, giving grief to families with fixed incomes. Ginger is selling for INR 250-350 per kg over the normal average of INR 100-120.

Vendors had stopped giving coriander with daily purchases, now chillies are dispensed as well. Green chillies are burning the pocket at INR 200-300 per kilo over the normal INR 100, and coriander has come to cost INR 200-350/ kg (INR 60-100 per bunch as compared to INR 20-40).

On the other hand, french beans, always more expensive than other vegetables at INR 120-160, now costs INR 250 per kg. And green peas, which are currently not in season, are available sparingly for INR 250-300 per kg. Lemons are being sold at INR 12-15 apiece.
