Mumbai on Thursday, March 18, recorded 2,877 new coronavirus cases which took the tally of cases in the city to 3,52,835, civic officials said. Meanwhile, 1193 patients were discharged.

The city has witnessed the highest single-day spike in the cases since October 7 when 2,848 had tested positive.

With eight fatalities, the death toll due to the pandemic in the country's financial capital increased to 11,555.

The number of cases in the city has shown a steady spike in March, following which the overall growth rate of infection in the city has jumped to 0.51 per cent.

The daily morbidity in the Mumbai metropolitan region has reached close to 5,000 on Thursday.

Also, this is the third time when single-day cases have surpassed the 2,800-mark.

Three weeks ago, Mumbai's daily count was below 500. Since February 17, the count crossed the 700-mark.

As many as 23,402 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the last 24-hours, taking the total number of tests to 36,37,790.

The sudden spike in fresh infections in Maharashtra is being primarily attributed to two factors: the reopening, including that of the Mumbai local trains, and the mutant strain found in districts like Akola, Satara, Amravati etc.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ruled out any plans to impose lockdown in Mumbai, though the city has been brought under strong surveillance with BMC also stepping up containment measures.
