As per reports, due to the Mumbai Metro being under construction at various places across the city, traffic jam has ensued on the roads of Mumbai as a result of the extensive excavations.

Moreover, due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown and subsequent closure of the local trains, the number of vehicles on the streets of Mumbai has witnessed an increase. Even though there have been gradual relaxations in the lockdown norms, the transportation system in the city has not resumed with full capacity. Even with the kaali-peeli taxis, the BEST buses and the rickshaws, these modes of transportation have proven to be inadequate or time-consuming. As a result, many officers, employees and workers are travelling in private vehicles. As a result, the conflict is compounded by the large number of private vehicles plying the roads.

The Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) route connecting Mulund to Sion has been under construction for the last few months. So, the already narrow LBS route is even more aggressive. In the morning there are traffic jams going south (Sion, Dadar) and in the evening going north (Mulund, Thane). It takes one to one and a half hour for a two-wheeler to reach Sonapur Chowk of Bhandup from Gandhinagar Chowk of Vikhroli even though the actual distance is 15 to 20 minutes.

In addition, a number of accidents have occurred on the route in the last few months due to the protective wall erected in the middle of the road by the contractors working on the Metro project. Vehicles coming from other lanes or pedestrians crossing the road are not visible due to the height of protective walls. Moreover, metro works are also underway at three to four places on the Western Expressway. Much of the Expressway has been occupied for the construction of stations on this route. As a result, the road has become narrow and the vehicles coming from Dahisar to Bandra in the morning and from Bandra to Dahisar in the evening get stuck in the area.
