After the tragic collapse of Himalaya foot overbridge in South Mumbai, Mumbai Police filed an FIR against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Central Railway officials under section 304 – negligence leading to death or culpable homicide – of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Azad Maidan Police station.

Accordingly, chief engineer A.R. Patil, S.K. Kori, and Sub-Chief Engineer R.B. Tare along with Assistant Engineer S.F. Kakulte have been suspended. Along with this, the civic body has decided to blacklist the company that prepared the structural audit report for the bridge.

After Andheri’s Gokhale bridge collapsed last year, the BMC ordered the structural audit of all the bridges in Mumbai. Union Minister Piyush Goyal had informed regarding the same on the site of the incident. Himalaya foot over the bridge was also audited and was declared “safe” with the suggestion for minor repairs.

In the wake of the accident, now the accused officials will be investigated and a notice has been issued to the company with the contract for the bridge's faulty audit report.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an investigation and has assured that the culprits will be brought to justice.
