According to latest reports, seven people were killed and at least 19 others wounded in a major fire that broke out in a 20-storey building in south Mumbai on Saturday morning, January 22.
Officials stated that the incident transpired at nearly 7.30 am on the 18th floor of the Kamala building situated near Bhatia Hospital in Mumbai's Tardeo area. The fire has reportedly been designated as a level 3 fire.

Following the incident, Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited the site and had said that the government would be giving an ex gratia amount of INR 5 lakhs to the families of victims who lost their lives.

• There were reports about 2 hospitals refusing treatment, however both hospitals informed me that they have admitted & treated some of those injured in this fire.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had said that the fire would be investigated. "Our guardian minister of Mumbai Suburban Aaditya Thackeray and Mumbai City guardian minister Aslam Shaikh will look into it," he had added.
Based on narratives, Chief fire officer Hemant Parab said that around 30 people were rescued by fire Brigade using staircase. The entire building was smoke-logged due to a common duct running along the length of building, he added.
As per reports, nearly 19 injured were injured in the hospital and rushed to Bhatia and Nair hospitals. Of the total, 15 of the injured were admitted to Bhatia Hospital, other four were sent to Nair Hospital.
Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar visited the location and stated that six old-age individuals required an oxygen support system and thus they have been shifted to the hospital. It has been reported that 13 fire engines are present at the location.
The fire was caused by a short-circuit in an air conditioner in one of the apartments, news agency Associated Press quoted Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar as saying.

Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences and tweeted: "Saddened by the building fire at Tardeo in Mumbai. Condolences to the bereaved families and prayers with the injured for the speedy recovery."

Twenty one fire engines and seven jumbo tankers were deployed. The blaze was brought under control after a five-hour effort, officials further mentioned.
