On April 13, there was a blast reported in a chemical factory unit in Tarapur area of Palghar.  Two people have lost their life and one has been injured in this incident. As per the officials, as many as 66 workers were in the sanitiser and hand wash unit situated in the Tarapur chemical zone when the incident took place.

“At 11.30 am, smoke was detected after which a huge blast was heard. Two people have died in the incident. One is injured,” the official added.

Two workers who lost their lives in the blast have been identified as Vijay Pandurang Sawant and Sameer Shahbudeen Khwaja while another worker who is injured is Runal Prabhakar Rawat, a police official in Palghar stated.

The nation is currently under lockdown and as the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the demand for sanitisers. The unit was hence allowed to work amid coronavirus lockdown to manufacture the essential item.

A few days back, in order to meet up with the increase in the demand of sanitizers, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had permitted distilleries and sugar factories for the production of hand sanitizers. After the approval from the FDA, Maharashtra has been able to produce up to 2 lakh litres of hand sanitizers daily.

Some of the sugar factories in the state including Vasantdada Patil Cooperative Sugar Factory in Sangli, Rajarambapu Cooperative Sugar Factory in Islampur and Kolhapur Cooperative Sugar Factory have already scaled up production and launched the supply of hand sanitizers.
