Two urban planning students have taken an initiative to create a guidebook for concerned authorities to keep public places free of COVID-19. The central and state government have gradually allowed businesses to restart their operations under their unlocking process.

However, the people are still not venturing out in public places as the threat of coronavirus still remains. Therefore, two students - Nisarg Shah and Smrithi Prasad - have created a guidebook for decision-makers to better basic infrastructure at public places. The guidebook suggests mediations for public spaces in urban areas including public transport, parks, malls, market complexes, streets, schools and offices.

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, the guidebook has been designed under the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and CEPT University. The project has been funded for Sustainable Urban Development of Smart Cities under the BMZ (Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development).

The guidebook has also been designed for people who can’t read as it contains illustrations, Nisarg Shah said. He is pursuing a Bachelors in Urban Design from CEPT University. Shah further informed that the illustrations from the handbook can be pasted in public places to remind people to practice social distancing.

The guidebook suggests that the government should improve the public health facilities and create health checkpoints across the city. It also states that the government and private institutions should come together to raise awareness through street art about curbing the spread of the coronavirus by means of practising social distancing.
