The Mumbai Police have registered cases against Uber and Rapido bike taxi services for operating without permission from the Maharashtra government. The cases were filed on Tuesday, June 17, after a complaint by a Regional Transport Office (RTO) inspector.

According to reports, the bike taxi services were carrying passengers in the city without approval from the state government or the RTO. The complaint was registered at the Azad Maidan police station. As per sources, RTO staff carried out mock rides to confirm that both companies were running services without proper licences.

The transport commissioner had instructed officers to take strict action against both companies. In April, Rapido had received a notice from the RTO for operating illegally and carrying passengers without a licence.

On Tuesday, RTO officials approached the police and lodged formal complaints under cheating charges, specifically under Section 318(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with several provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. An investigation is now underway.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government is working on new rules for electric bike taxi services. A draft notification was issued on May 22 under a government resolution titled "Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules, 2025". The draft will regulate app-based bike taxi operators under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The draft rules also invite objections and suggestions from the public. The deadline for feedback was June 5. The government plans to launch e-bike taxi services in cities with a population of more than one lakh. The scheme is expected to create over 10,000 jobs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and 10,000 more across the state.
