Citizens will now have the pleasure of seeing crocodiles at the Byculla Zoo. The construction of the Underwater Reptile Viewing Gallery is in its final stage and will be open to the public from the third week of April. It will also soon have a new addition of crocodiles and alligators.

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Garden and Zoo, popularly known as Rani Baug, currently houses five crocodiles and two aligator. Zoo officials have noticed that visitors spend a lot of time looking at the reptiles. Hence the BMC has decided to increase the number of reptiles and build a separate underground viewing gallery in an area of 4,200 square metres.


20 crores for the construction of Viewing Gallery.

The BMC had allocated INR 20 crore for the construction of the viewing gallery. The first viewing gallery will have an elevated platform through which visitors will be able to view the reptiles. It will also have another viewing gallery to provide underwater views of the reptiles through a transparent glass window. Ozonation filters will be installed to keep the water clean.


Will be opened for viewing by third week of April

The exhibition will remain open for viewing till the third week of April. It will have space for 10 crocodiles and 10 alligators. Efforts are being made to bring more reptiles to the zoo.
